The identification of coexpressed genes from microarray data is a challenging problem in bioinformatics and computational biology. The objective of this study is to obtain knowledge about the most important genes and clusters related to production outputs of real-world time-series microarray data in the industrial microbiology area. Each sample in the microarray data experiment is complemented with the measurement of the corresponding production and growth values. A novel aspect of this research refers to considering the relation of coexpression patterns with the measured outputs to guide the biological interpretation of results. Shape-based clustering models are developed using the pattern of gene expression values over time and further incorporating knowledge about the correlation between the change in the gene expression level and the output value. Experiments are performed for time-series microarray of bacteria, and an analysis from a biological perspective is carried out. The obtained results confirm the existence of relationships between output variables and gene expressions. Moreover, the shape-based clustering methods show promising results, being able to guide metabolic engineering actions with the identification of potential targets.  相似文献

A wide variety of anticorrosive treatments for aluminum alloys that can be employed as “green” alternatives to those based on Cr(VI) are currently under development. This article reports a study of the morphological and anticorrosive characteristics of surface layers formed on the Al–Cu alloy AA2017 by immersion treatment in baths of cerium salt, accelerated by increased temperature and the employment of hydrogen peroxide. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS) studies of the samples treated have demonstrated the existence of a heterogeneous layer formed by a film of aluminum oxide/hydroxide on the matrix, and a series of dispersed islands of cerium over the cathodic intermetallics. The protective efficacy has been evaluated using electrochemical techniques, linear polarizations (LP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and salt spray tests. The results obtained indicate that the layer provided good resistance to corrosion in media with chlorides, and the method gives a considerable reduction of the time required for the immersion treatments.  相似文献

This paper gravitates on the spectrum channel allocation problem where each compounding node of a cognitive radio network is assigned a frequency channel for transmission over a given outgoing link, based on optimizing an overall network performance metric dependant on the level of interference among nearby nodes. In this context, genetically inspired algorithms have been extensively used so far for solving this optimization problem in a computationally efficient manner. This work extends previous preliminary research carried out by the authors on the application of the heuristic Harmony Search (HS) algorithm to this scenario by presenting further results and derivations on both HS-based centralized and distributed spectrum allocation techniques. Among such advances, a novel adaptive island-like distributed allocation procedure is presented, which dramatically decreases the transmission rate required for exchanging control traffic among nodes at a quantifiable yet negligible performance penalty. Extensive simulation results executed over networks of increasing size verify, on one hand, that our proposed technique achieves near-optimum spectral channel assignments at a low computational complexity. On the other hand, the obtained results assess that HS vastly outperforms genetically inspired allocation algorithms for the set of simulated scenarios. Finally, the proposed adaptive distributed allocation approach is shown to attain a control traffic bandwidth saving of more than 90% with respect to the naive implementation of a HS-based island allocation procedure.  相似文献

In this paper we present WEEV (Writing Environment for Educational Video games), a methodology for educational point-and-click adventure game authoring. Our approach aims to allow educators to actively collaborate in the educational game development process, using a narrative-based representation. WEEV is based on a pragmatic reinterpretation of previous works on narrativity and video games, enhanced by the use of a novel visual language to represent the flow of the story or narrative. The WEEV methodology has been implemented into an actual tool based on the already established <e-Adventure> platform for educational games. This tool was improved with feedback gathered from formative evaluation, end-users testing (i.e. educators), and actual use in the development of an educational game. The system, still under development, presents some user-interaction problems along with a need for the educational effectiveness of the resulting games to be further analyzed. However, this paper highlights that, according to the qualitative results of evaluations, WEEV can indeed be successfully applied to simplify the game creation process and that by using representations of games that educators can understand, WEEV can help provide educational value to games.  相似文献

Bidimensional convolution is a low-level processing algorithm of interest in many areas, but its high computational cost constrains the size of the kernels, especially in real-time embedded systems. This paper presents a hardware architecture for the FPGA-based implementation of 2-D convolution with medium–large kernels. It is a multiplierless solution based on Distributed Arithmetic implemented using general purpose resources in FPGAs. Our proposal is modular and coefficient independent, so it remains fully flexible and customizable for any application. The architecture design includes a control unit to manage efficiently the operations at the borders of the input array. Results in terms of occupied resources and timing are reported for different configurations. We compare these results with other approaches in the state of the art to validate our approach.  相似文献

The interaction between enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EPBR) and biological nitrogen removal may result in EBPR failure in full‐scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This work studies one of the common causes of this failure: the presence of nitrate in the anaerobic phase, which may act as an inhibitor for polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAO) activity or may activate the competition between PAO and denitrifying bacteria for the carbon source. Several batch experiments were performed with different carbon sources (acetic acid, propionic acid and sucrose) at different nitrate concentrations using PAO‐enriched sludge from two different pilot plants: an anaerobic/aerobic sequential batch reactor (SBR) and an anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2/O) continuous plant. The results imply that the operational conditions of the A2/O pilot plant selected a PAO population capable of i) coexisting with nitrate without an inhibitory effect and ii) outcompeting denitrifying bacteria for the carbon source, in contrast to the SBR pilot plant where nitrate had an inhibitory effect on EBPR. The study consisted of three objectives: (a) to test the relative prominence and conspicuousness of a warning required by US law to be conspicuous; (b) to explore whether or not the conspicuousness of the said warning can be enhanced graphically; and (c) to develop preliminary data for power analysis that would guide decisions related to sample size in future studies. Seventeen subjects viewed four over‐the‐counter drug packages (each with a different style of warning) along with five other products while wearing an eye tracking device. Four styles of warning were used on the over‐the‐counter drug packages: no outline and no fill, outline and no fill, no outline and fill, and outline and fill. The surface area and the placement of the warnings were held constant across all four designs and were consistent with those on commercially available products. Collected data were broken into five zones: warning, brand name, strength, product benefit and net weight. Despite the fact that US law requires it to be conspicuous, the tested warning was significantly less noticeable than the brand name (objective one) for all dependent variables analyzed (α = 0.05). No significant difference was indicated for the varied warning designs (objective two). This could be because not much can be done to enhance prominence when constrained to the limited space that is typically used for such warnings or because of the limited sample size. Power calculations suggest that a sample size of nearly 200 subjects would be required to detect a 2.5 s mean difference at 80% confidence (objective three).
